From 1st June 2018 the charge associated with the issue of a new smart card will be changing from 50p to £1.00.
This charge applies to all standard smartcards issued with the first purchase of a product through a Ticket Vending Machine located at Interchanges or when bought on-board buses and trams.
All our smart cards are re-usable and extensively tested for durability to make sure our customers can keep on using them, and loading products to them, over and over again.
We have always encouraged our customers to keep and re-use their card, changing the design in 2017 to promote this, but research suggests that customers are choosing to get a new card with each ticket they purchase. This unfortunately has an environmental impact as well as pushing up operating costs for us and our participant operators and as a result we have had to implement this change.
Customers who already have a smart card are reminded that they can avoid this charge by simply re-using their existing card.
