07 February 2020

FROM 01 MARCH 2020 more young people in South Yorkshire will have access to some of the UK’s lowest priced discounted travel tickets as transport operators introduce enhancements to the discount that they provide against the region’s multi-operator ticketing offer.

TravelMaster, the commercial organisation responsible for multi-operator ticketing in the region, is increasing the age-range it provides a discount for as the 18-21 Discount Card becomes the 18-22 Discount Card. This change means that all young people in the region, no matter what their educational status, will now be able to pay less for their travel up to the day before their 23rd birthday instead of their 22nd.

To announce the new and improved 18-22 Discount Card TravelMaster is sponsoring the Sheffield Varsity 2020 event; this is one of the largest University sporting events in the country. Throughout March teams from Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Sheffield will compete in over 70 fixtures to see who will be crowned champion at the FlyDSA Arena on the 1st April.

The 18-22 Discount Card means that all young people travelling throughout South Yorkshire, regardless of where they live or their educational status, will be eligible for a discount of 15% against advance purchase prices for TravelMaster’s tickets valid across all buses, trams & trains in the region.

With a discounted 28-day ticket a young person aged 22 and under will pay as little as:

  • £1.86 a day to travel on all buses in Sheffield
  • £1.99 a day to travel on all buses and trams in Sheffield
  • £1.97 a day to travel on all buses (and trams) in Barnsley, Rotherham or Doncaster.
  • £2.68 a day to travel on all buses and trams across South Yorkshire
  • £3.48 a day to travel on all buses, trams and trains across South Yorkshire.

Matt Smallwood, TravelMaster’s director & general manager, said: “TravelMaster already provides some of the lowest priced multi-operator tickets in the country and I am delighted that we have been able to increase the age-range eligible for a discount against them.

We’re sponsoring the Sheffield Varsity to drive awareness of the new and improved youth offer for undergraduate students but anyone aged-22 and under can apply for the card and with it enjoy access to discounted and unlimited travel tickets that work out costing less a day than a meal-deal or latte”.

The new 18-22 Discount Card will be available to apply for through the website from 01 March 2020 whilst all existing 18-21 Discount Cards will continue to work until they expire. Holders of the new card will be able to buy their discounted ticket online and load it to their card in seconds through all NFC Compatible Android and iPhone devices or by picking it up on board select services.
